You do not need to add people to your ignore list for forever. Time to grow up and toughen up.

I don't have anyone currently on my ignore list. I've had people before but like its been said they usually either forget or give up after a short stay on the ignore list.
But, if someone has their IGN on websites such as this they are making themselves vulnerable to hate campaigns so although I wouldn't use it, I can see why the ignore list might be more useful if it was bigger.

I only have 3-4 people on my ignore at any given time. Most of the time it's some 12 year old noob who's adopted me as their new best friend because I helped them out. So, they decide to PM me every time they forget which way to wipe. I put them on ignore and, after a few days, they've moved on to another helpful citizen so I remove them.

I would argue that depends on when and how fast the gold-selling spam bots get banned.
Within the past couple of weeks, gold-selling spam bots have become an epidemic in Guild Wars and indeed a humongous ignore list is necessary to accomodate all of them.
I'm not talking about those who spam in town in Local chat, I'm talking about those who whisper spam you when you are in UW or FOW or any Explorable Area. As of recently it happens constantly. These guys have recorded your name from seeing you stand in town, likely stored it in their database, and will whisper spam you more than once and on different days if you do not have them on your ignore list.
Unless Anet can and will ban all of these gold-selling spam bots in very short order and crush the epidemic soon, indeed they should increase the ignore list size by about 100x at least.

It is personal choice, or better yet, the object of Free Will, that each of us have the right to choose what we wish to be subjected to and what we chose to ignore, for we do not care for the subject material that is being shoved right in our faces.
It has nothing to do with toughness and the Growing Up should be directed to the ones who knowingly disrupt local chat, or PM's, with content that does not belong in those channels. Simply put, to provide example, if I choose not to be subjected to junk Television shows such as American Idol, or the latest Entertainment Gossip news on Paris Hiltons daily life, I chose to ignore the show. Perhaps someone else may be interested in such information, but not I. Subjecting myself to it, as to toughen myself up, sounds more of a myth, as though putting myself through such garbage, will somehow strengthen my resolve for stupidity, or as though it's educational for me to pay attention to it. I think not.
Having an extended list doesn't hinder gameplay of anyone. So in the end, those who don't use the list, shouldn't have any issue if it were extended.

I use ignore to get the immediate whisper offenders off my junk...after a day or so I take them off and I never have any problems. I have one person on there now who gave me grief only yesterday...and when I load up the game again today I'll take him off.
it's that easy.

Switch off trade and local chat. Easy.

I see.
So the those like myself, who aren't abusing local chat by spamming trades, but are engaging in general conversations with people, must completely shut off their chat now and not converse at all with anyone, so that we may accomodate the relentless trade spammers in the local chat.
That's not a solution. That's condoning actions that should not be taking place.
So, shut my entire chat off because I'm using it in a responsible manner? I don't think so.
Place as many inconsiderate, disrespectful, abusive, and selfish local chat spammers on my ignore list as possible, so I can chat amungst people peacefully? Absolutely.
So in conclusion and to restate, would I personally like a larger ignore list? Yes. If one is put in place, does it change the gameplay manner of those who never make use of it? No, it doesn't. Do I think it's urgently needed and something I am demanding? No. Just consider it a wishlist item and hope that Santa sees it.

ignoring anyone is rarely necessary, i had 1 person on my ignore list for about an hour in my entire combined playing time.
Disable trade chat
Disable emotions
Disable chat if you aren't in town to chat (why would you buy a game to talk with people anyway?)
problem solved.
I don't know about everyone else. but i can easily keep up with chat to catch anything I'm looking for, maybe i just read faster than the average person?

Oh come on, you're making it 100x worse then it really is. Yes, Kamadan etc are full of shit, guess what? unless you're trading you don't need to be there. Even if you do need to venture into the trade towns, go to the lowest district possible. Most of the other outposts and towns are perfectly fine. There will always be the odd dick, but shit happens.
Chatting in local? since when did people use local to chat? form a group and then use team chat or PM's like everyone else does.

No. I don't need a bigger ignore list.
But a feature to atutomatically remove names from that list over time would be nice.

Well, if you use your ignore list, just remove people from it after some time, because they will forget you... I never had more than 2-3 people on it.
